How does mother’s vegan diet affect the development of a newborn? Find out

A study says that a vegan diet has no impact on the levels of carnitine and vitamin B2 in breast milk, two nutrients essential for a newborn’s growth. The Amsterdam University Medical Center’s study found these facts. Research has found that lactating mothers following a vegan diet compared to mothers with an omnivorous diet showed no difference in the human milk concentrations of vitamin B2 or carnitine, despite these nutrients being found in the highest concentrations in animal products.

The study was presented at the 55th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). Using a technique that separates a sample into its individual parts and analyses their mass, this study challenges assumptions that vegan diets may not be nutritionally complete and that breastfed infants of vegan mothers may be at an increased risk of developing vitamin B2 or carnitine deficiency.

Vegan mothers’ milk contains two important nutrients

  • Researchers say breast milk from mothers who are on a vegan diet contains a sufficient amount of vitamin B2 and carnitine.
  • The research counters previous studies that reported that vegan breastmilk lacked some essential nutrients.
  • Experts say mothers on a vegan diet still need to make sure they are ingesting calories and nutrients for the infant’s health as well as their own health.

Following a vegan diet does not impact the levels of vitamin B2 and carnitine in maternal breastmilk.

That’s the conclusion of research presented this week at the 55th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

The findings have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

In the study, researchers reported that lactating mothers who were vegan showed no difference compared with omnivorous

  • New research finds that breastmilk from parents who eat a vegan diet does contain two important nutrients, carnitine and vitamin B2.
  • The findings challenge previous assumptions that vegan diets may not be nutritionally complete.
  • The research also challenges concerns that breastfed infants of vegan parents may be at risk of developing vitamin B2 or carnitine deficiency.

Vegan parents’ breast milk contains two important nutrients, says new research from the Amsterdam UMC study presented at the 55th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN).

The new findings challenge assumptions that vegan diets may not be nutritionally complete and that breastfed infants of vegan parents may be at an increased risk of developing vitamin B2 or carnitine deficiency, says the study authors

Breastfeeding While Vegan? It’s Healthy and Safe, Research Finds

Amsterdam UMC researchers have revealed groundbreaking findings that alleviate any potential concerns regarding the nutritional adequacy of breast milk from vegan mothers. According to a study presented at the 55th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, a vegan diet does not impact the essential nutrients, vitamin B2, and carnitine, found in breast milk

These nutrients, typically found in high concentrations in animal products, are crucial for infant development.

With the number of vegans doubling over the past four years, some people might question whether breastfed infants of vegan mothers could face deficiencies in key nutrients. Lead researcher Hannah Juncker, MD, emphasized the significance of the maternal diet on the composition of human milk.

“The rise of vegan diets worldwide, including among lactating mothers, has raised concerns about the nutritional adequacy of their milk,” Juncker said in a statement.
