Consumers Navigate Rising Food Prices, While Still Prioritizing Health: 2023 IFIC Food and Health Survey

Rising food prices may have more of an impact on food purchases this year, but consumers are still making healthy choices and trying new things, according to the latest Food and Health Survey from the International Food Information Council (IFIC).

The results of IFIC’s online survey of more than 1,000 Americans between the ages of 18 and 80 reveal what drives food and beverage purchases, how consumers define healthy food, how they feel about food safety, and more. 

Food prices increase their impact on shopping behaviors

Taste still ranks highest among food and beverage purchase drivers, with 87% of consumers putting it in the top spot this year (up from 80%). But price is a close second, moving up from 68% to 76%. How Can the Healthcare Industry Make It Easier for Patients To Make Healthier Food Choices?

Most Americans don’t eat a healthy diet and take in too much sodium, saturated fat and sugar. But it shouldn’t be this way, said one industry expert.

“This shouldn’t be so hard,” said Dr. Elizabeth Klodas, founder of healthy food company Step One Foods, during a Tuesday panel at the MedCity INVEST conference in Chicago. “We should be able to walk into any grocery store for anything from any shelf and put [food] into our carts and feel good about it and know that it’s helping our health. We live in a food environment that is completely dysfunctional, that makes hyper-palatable, calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods that are addictive, cheap and advertise non-stop.”

The change has to come from the food and health industry itself, and there should be incentives in place for food companies, she added.
