It can take a while to replenish blood components after a donation

Adam Cohen and Dr. Judith James

Although it takes several weeks for our blood to return to normal after a donation, most people can resume usual activity levels the same day.

Adam’s Journal

We had a blood drive recently at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. When I complimented a coworker for participating, he mentioned it takes the body 56 days to “replenish” that pint of donated blood. Is that true?

Dr. James Prescribes

Not exactly. Blood donation centers require donors to wait eight weeks — 56 days — between donations to ensure their body has had adequate time to replenish the blood components lost during the previous donation. But the process doesn’t usually take that long.

When you donate blood, you give up a little less than 10% of your blood volume. In a healthy donor, plasma, the liquid component of blood, is replenished within 24 hours. Platelet and white blood cell counts return to normal in a few days to a week. But red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body, take

Does your diet have enough healthy fat? Here’s how to make sure

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Fat and food: When we hear those words together, we typically think bad things.

However, Sentara Healthcare Registered Dietitian Ashley Moody says eating fat can be good for us.

“When we think about good fats, we often think about monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids,” said Ashley. “All you need to know is that these are fatty acids. When we ingest them, when we eat them, they’re so essential! We need them, that’s why they’re called ‘essential fatty acids.'”

To show our options and see how easy it is to add healthy fats into our routine, Ashley and I worked on making a good, fat-friendly salad. We started off with some spinach and included the basics: carrots, broccoli and tomatoes.

Then, we added the good fat ingredients. Ashley gave me kudos for selecting unsalted almonds.

“You’ve made the healthiest choice,” she said.

10 Mental Health Awareness Month Activities

In the weeks after my daughter returned home from an inpatient mental health treatment early this year, she and I spent a lot of time by the stream that curls through my apartment complex. There, she began to rediscover some of the simple joys she once loved as a curious, carefree child. We turned over rocks in a stream to see the life in miniature living beneath, pulled up some wild onion grasses, and took samples of everything back home to look at under a microscope.

There was something essential in these mental health awareness activities, in the science, the learning, the wonder, and in the grounding of her and me together. There was something profoundly human about reveling in the everyday parts of nature that we come to overlook when our lives get too complicated and hurried. Here are other May mental health awareness month activities you can try

Medically reviewed by Suzanne Fisher, MS

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is a B vitamin that’s essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as cellular signaling and gene regulation.

Biotin is concentrated in several foods, including eggs and fish, and is naturally produced by your gut bacteria. Biotin deficiency is rare, and supplementation isn’t usually necessary for healthy people.

That said, biotin supplements may be helpful for certain populations, including pregnant women and those with some medical conditions.

Here’s everything you need to know about biotin, including its health benefits and side effects.

Benefits of Biotin

Biotin is found in many plant and animal-based foods, including eggs, meat, nuts, and seeds. In addition to dietary intake, bacteria residing in the large intestine, such as Bacteroides fragilis, Fusobacterium varium, Prevotella copri, and Campylobacter coli, naturally produce biotin.

If you’re trying to level up to a healthier lifestyle, you’ve likely heard the news: Just exercising doesn’t cut it. A good diet is just as important as cardio or daily workouts, and some research even says a bad diet can negate the positive effects of exercise.
